Know Before You Sign or Scan

Union authorization cards are critical to the success of any union’s organizing campaign. If you sign a card or submit one online, you are authorizing the union to act as your exclusive collective bargaining representative for the purpose of negotiating wages, benefits, and other terms and conditions of employment with Dignity Health. There are no guarantees during negotiations as the union can only get what Dignity Health agrees to during the process.

Union authorization cards can be in the form of paper cards or petitions, or they can be submitted through an online form by scanning a QR code from your phone. If you are asked to scan something, always ask what it is for and read the fine print on any online form.

Here are some important questions you may want to ask union organizers who are trying to get your signature and support:

 What could it cost me?

  • How much are union dues? Will I have to pay an initiation fee?
  • If unions are successful in revoting Arizona’s right-to-work laws, will the union force everyone to pay full union dues? Is it possible that I could lose my job if I don’t pay?
  • If the union called for a strike, how much could that cost me?

 What will I get?

  • Can you guarantee me pay and benefit increases or benefit protections?
  • Does your union provide benefits to members or will my benefits still come from Dignity Health? If I can receive benefits through the union, are they better than what Dignity Health offers?

What are my risks?

  • Is it possible that I might lose the benefits I already have with a union contract?
  • Could I lose the flexibility I currently have with my manager? What if my personal scheduling needs are not allowed by the union contract?
  • What if I want to work instead of going on strike?
  • Could I be fined or “charged” by the union for not choosing to go on strike?
  • How will my direct working relationship with my manager and Dignity Health leadership change? Who will speak for me?
